  1.     The .284 Winchester is unique; the only 
  2. cartridge in current production of rebated rim 
  3. design.  This means that it's body is wider than 
  4. it's standard .47-inch rim, yielding a case 
  5. (.500) that almost equals the magnums in 
  6. diameter.

  8.     The .284 then, is probably the most powerful 
  9. medium-bore short-action cartridge, where size 
  10. and weight can be important considerations.  This 
  11. may be why the Ultra-Lite Model 20 is ordered 
  12. more often in .284 than any other chambering.

  14.     The .284 also has been the wildcatter's 
  15. dream!  It's 7mm neck has been sized up and down 
  16. the spectrum, with particular favorites at 
  17. 6mm/284 and .30/284.  Hodgen Manual No. 26 
  18. considers their.30-06 reloading data applicable 
  19. also to the .30/284, and even lists them together 
  20. in the page title.

  22.     The .284 was introduced in 1963 for the Model 
  23. 88 Lever-Action and Model 100 Semi-automatic 
  24. rifles and carbines, about the same time as the 
  25. 7mm Rem. Mag. and .300 Win Mag.  In 1994 
  26. Winchester introduced a Model 70 bolt-action in 
  27. .284.  Browning also offers the A-Bolt in this 
  28. fine caliber.

  30.     The .284 Winchester has excellent ballistics, 
  31. particularly with lighter bullets.
